The City College of New York, officially called City College of the City University of New York and more often referred to as simply City College, CCNY, or colloquially as City, is a a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY), in New York City, the most populous city in the US state of New York, its population being approximated at a number of approximately 8.4 million inhabitants, during the 2009 census.
CCNY was established in 1847 and was the first free public institution of higher education in the US. It was originally founded as the Free Academy of the City of New York, by wealthy businessman and president of the Board of Education Townsend Harris. It currently offers its students `minors and majors and graduate programs numbering 150 and growing`, including `13 doctoral programs with others planned providing a further impetus to CCNY's growing reputation as a highly respected seat of higher education.`
CCNY's athletic teams are known as the Beavers and they compete in NCAA Division III, CUNY Athletic Conference, ECAC, NECVA, NIWFA, EWFC, and CTC, with 17 varsity sports, of which 8 are for women and 9 are for women. Their distinctive colors are lavender and black.
